Poker Chips Design and Tips
Poker chips, or poker tokens, are used to keep track during gambling, to replace money during the game. Even though poker chips are called clay chips, poker chip sets are not made of clay. Sometimes clay is used as filler, but it is always mixed with some synthetic material for durability. Clay composite chip sets were popular in the early 1800s and today are rarely used mainly because they are more expensive and tend to break easily.
All casinos have their own unique colorful designs or at least a logo on their poker chip sets. These sets are produced only by a few specially appointed companies in the US , and the designs are protected by copyright. Today the most popular poker chip sets are made of plastic, clay composite, and acrylic. Since 1930s poker chip sets were decorated with metal foil for extra durability and security. Ten years later, poker chip sets were printed in the center and along the edges.
For home gambling metal core poker or plastic chip sets are used. The metal core ones are heavier, can be customized in design and color scheme, which adds that special casino feel to them. Plastic poker chip sets are more lightweight and can be damaged easily. On the other hand, they are less expensive and can be bought anywhere in any quantity. Plastic poker chip sets are the best choice for beginners in gambling, or for people who play occasionally. When people become serious about poker and start playing regularly, they prefer to invest into metal core poker chip sets or even in composite clay poker chip sets.
If you decide to keep your casino poker chip set, you need to provide them good "shelter". To keep your poker chips safe you need a poker chip case with lock and key where you would store your precious poker chip set during the poker session. Most often, you will get a complementary poker chip case when you place an order for a poker chip set. If you buy one separately, look for the case made of metal or hard wood, with a reliable lock and soft interior lining to protect chips and cards. Plastic or vinyl cases are easily damaged and do not provide enough protection for heavier poker chip sets.
Always
Go for the best quality you can afford and that you order enough chips to accommodate the number of players you usually have.
DO not have too many chips, but if you order not enough of them, you can easily add more.
Store them in a reliable poker chip case.

The second panel shows our dayglo colors which make excellent edge spot color, but can also be used as a chip body color. While the choice of color is a matter of personal preference, here are traditional colors used by casinos: $1 White or Blue, $5 Red, $25 Green, $100 Black, $500 Purple or Lavender

If you do not want edge spots please go to step three now. Edge spots are used by most clubs and casinos to give extra security and beauty to their chips. When selecting an edge spot colors we recommend choosing contrasting colors. Example, when using a dark color for the main color use a light color for an edge spot. Dayglo colors are excellent for edge spots

Poker Chips have been manufactured from a wide variety of materials, in an infinite variety of styles, for as long as man has played poker and required a simple method to keep track of winnings. The three most common materials used today in the manufacture of poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylic composite.
Poker Chip Cases
It is imperative that you get a high quality poker chip case to protect and secure your poker chips, cards and dealer button. The poker chips will remain safe under lock and key during play, leaving you to concentrate on your play. You can quickly determine if any poker chips are missing, after a playing session, when you rack the poker chips back into the poker chip case. Lost or missing poker chips can cost you if they are removed from the set during the penny-ante game on Tuesday and reintroduced into the high stakes game on Friday.
Plastic Poker Chips are the entry level and economical poker chip that is available for purchase nearly everywhere. Plastic poker chip quality ranges from the extremely cheap poker chips sold at supermarkets in the toy aisle to heavy solid plastic poker chips that can weight as much as 7 grams. Plastic poker chips do not offer much in the way of security and are easily damaged. They lack the look and heft of composite poker chips and tend to tinkle when splashing the pot.
Plastic Poker Chip Cases
A plastic poker chip case is the entry level carrying case for your poker chips. These poker chip cases are usually not lockable and provide a simple method of storing and carrying you poker chips. These poker chip cases offer the lowest cost and the shortest life of the specialized poker chip cases. Lack of security requires constant vigilance of your poker chips during the game.
Clay Poker Chips
While we refer to them as caly poker chips in reality no such product exists today. What is commonly referred to as a clay poker chip is actually a composite poker chip with some clay or kaolin filler mixed into a durable high impact polymer matrix.
Clay poker chips sets
Clay poker chips sets are often quite expensive and often in short supply due to their popularity. The industry standard clay poker chip weighs between 8 grams and 11.5 grams and measures 39mm in diameter.
Composite Metal Core Poker Chips
Composite metal core poker chips are used by most serious home game poker players. Metal core poker chips are heavy (8 gram or 11.5 grams)and very durable. These poker chips are readily available and can usually be customized through a hot stamping or decaling process for added security.
Metal Poker Chip Cases
The metal poker chip cases is the most common and popular poker chip case. Most metal poker chip cases are constructed from structural aluminum in a wide range of styles and price ranges. The quality of metal poker chip cases varies considerably, so keep in mind that metal is not synonymous with desirability. Some metal poker chip cases are not all metal and may have plastic panels and parts in their construction. In addition, some metal poker chip cases are not lockable.
Other types of poker chips sets:
Vinyl Poker Chip Cases
The vinyl poker chip case is a step above the plastic poker chip case listed above and provides greater protection for your poker chip set. The vinyl poker chip case is normally constructed from wood or plastic covered with a vinyl material. The vinyl poker chip case may or may not be lockable. Our experience with vinyl cases has not always been positive. The weight of a 500 poker chip set of 11.5 gram poker chips is close to twenty pounds and places considerable stress on the poker chip case and handle.
Wood Poker Chip Cases
Quality wood poker chip cases, with custom brass fittings, are our favorite poker chip cases. Wood poker chip cases are available in many styles and price ranges from the low end pine models to the, you can't afford it, carved exotic wood, with inlayed precious metals handmade by a master cabinet maker. Most affordable wood poker chip cases are constructed from pine, mahogany, oak and other hard woods.
